Why is Wimbledon 2024 so Iconic and Prestigious?

Wimbledon 2024: We all know that old is gold, and this can be seen in the world’s oldest tennis competition, known as the Wimbledon Championships, which is regarded as the most prestigious. Since 2019, this game has been played on outdoor grass courts with retractable roofs over the two main courts. In men’s and women’s singles competitions, there are a total of 128 players.

  • Men’s tournament- 104 direct entries
  • Women’s tournament- 108 direct entries

Eight wild cards are available for each of the two events; qualifiers make up the remaining field. 32 players have received seeds in the men’s and women’s singles competitions, while 16 pairs have received seeds in the doubles competitions since the tournament in 2001.

The seeded system was first used at the Wimbledon Championships in 1924. In this simplified form, countries were allowed to suggest four contestants, who were then assigned to different round sections. This approach was dropped for the 1927 Wimbledon Championships, and players were henceforth seeded on the basis of merit.

The US Open, the Australian Open, the French Open, and Wimbledon are the four Grand Slam competitions. Currently, tennis is the only major sport played on grass, which was the original surface of the game. Additionally, it is the only Grand Slam that still has a curfew at night, but matches can now go until 11:00 p.m. under the lights.

The Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s Singles Finals are scheduled on Saturday and Sunday after the second week.
