Floridians are preparing for Storm Helene and according to official updates, evacuations are in progress in the state. The Helene tropical storm warning is rapidly intensifying and getting bigger, prompting hurricane warnings. It is expected to be the most powerful tropical storm to strike the US in over a year.
The 45 mph Tropical Storm Helene (2024) formed in the northwestern Caribbean Sea on Tuesday morning and will strengthen in the coming hours. It is moving at a reckless speed over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico and it could become a category 3 major hurricane in less than 48 hours.
Helene Tropical Storm Warning Latest Warnings and Updates
According to the latest Hurricane advisory, Helene’s maximum sustained winds are gaining momentum to 60 mph, and Floridians may have to prepare for flooding rainfall, damaging winds, and dangerous storm surges.
The upcoming hours are crucial, as there could also be shifts in the storm’s track that may alter where the worst impact occurs. On Thursday, the storm is expected to cause landfall on Florida’s Gulf Coast, specifically in the Big Bend region.
National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane warning for the Gulf Coast part of Florida, from the Anclote River to Mexico Beach. The Mexican government has also issued a landfall warning from Cabo Catoche to Tulum.
Florida’s fifth hurricane since 2022
Helene would be the fifth hurricane to slam Florida since 2022 and the fourth to make landfalls in the United States this year. The Big Bend region has always been a hotspot for bigger hurricanes and storms. In early August, Category 1 Hurricane Debby unleashed its fury on the region, and the recovery efforts are still ongoing, as the residents prepare for another big blow.
Florida and Georgia begin preparations
Florida Government expanded an emergency declaration to its 61 counties over the threat of more landfall impacts. Currently, Tropical Storm Helene is projected to cause a serious storm surge, of up to 15 feet, in the Big Bend area.
The United States and local governments are working in clear coordination, and the storm efforts will be assisted by a 3000-member team of the Florida National Guard. Resources like Starlink Ready are also available for immediate assistance.
Pinellas County warns of a significant flood on Wednesday, and Tampa General hospital is arranging for a flood barrier. Major coastal health facilities have mandated emergency evacuations and advised emergency supplies for up to 72 hours.
Georgia’s government also declared a state of emergency due to the threat of Helene and expected storm winds. Authorities have urged the residents to prepare for wind impacts across all counties and to stay indoors.
